Since 1988, NBCC has been a member of the national network of Parent Services Project (P.S.P.). P.S.P. promotes parent participation, encourages active involvement in their child's development, and fosters leadership, decision-making and advocacy. Through NBCC's family support services parents can improve their parenting skills and develop a broader understanding of early child development, gain access to community services, increase their participation in their child's education, and maintain or seek employment.
NBCC is unique as it serves families from a wide spectrum of incomes and cultures. This diverse population contributes to the wholistic approach to cultural awareness and understanding. NBCC's P.S.P. includes an active "peer support" and "mentoring" component, where parents work together on issues that are relevant to their lives. Through NBCC and P.S.P., parents attend trainings on common issues they, as a group, define. Workshops chosen by parents in the past include: Helping Our Children Deal With Loss; How to Protect Your Child From Sexual Abuse; How Violence Effects Our Children and Keeping our Sanity and Coping.
NBCC offers a variety of social occasions for parents to come together which include: an annual picnic, quarterly potlucks, monthly evening and weekend respite care, annual men's breakfast, roller skating parties, family hikes, single-parent support activities, and the annual NBCC graduation. This past year NBCC identified a P.S.P staff representative who works closely with a parent committee to be the advocate for family support and to help organize family events. These activities occur both on and off site and are well attended by all families enrolled at NBCC.
