NBCC is one of three Marin County child care centers that have jointly received a grant to establish on-site organic gardens and learning programs for children enrolled at NBCC, Marin Head Start and the Novato Youth Center. NBCC, along with Slide Ranch, an organic garden and farm located in Golden Gate National Recreation Area, spearheaded the garden proposal and approached The First Five Marin Children and Families Commission, funded by Proposition 10 to promote the health of young children. The three-year, $150,000 grant was awarded to our three child care centers to establish one of California's first on-site learning gardens for children under the age of five. Here children will learn to grow and harvest fruit, vegetables and other edibles. We believe that by learning where food comes from and how it contributes to good health, children develop a taste for more natural foods and will make healthier food choices when given the option. Harvests from our garden will be used in the hot lunch programs and for snacks and the three childcare garden sites.
In the Spring of 2005, NBBC - Garden of Eatin' program was selected from nearly 900 school gardening programs nationwide to receive a 2005 Youth Garden Grant from the National Gardening Association (NGA), based in South Burlington, Vermont. As an award recipient The Garden of Eatin' program received an assortment of educational materials from the National Gardening Association and a contribution from Home Depot, recognizing that today's youth are the future of American gardening.
