NBCC's PreKindergarten and Family Literacy program at our McDowell site provides high quality early learning experiences for children preparing to enter kindergarten and who are in need of additional learning support. This program promotes school readiness and family literacy in partnership with parents, schools and other community programs. NBCC uses The Creative Curriculum for Preschool, which is a scientifically based, research tested, comprehensive curriculum model that links curriculum to assessment and to content area standards. In addition to The Creative Curriculum NBCC uses CDE's Environmental Rating Scale (ERS) developed by Thelma Harms to support the optimum learning environment. The goal of this program is for us to fully integrate early childhood education with culturally appropriate parent support and adult education - ensuring a successful transition to kindergarten.

Children in our programs are observed and given a developmental assessment (Desired Results Developmental Profile - DRDP) upon entering the program and every six months then on. The DRDP is utilized as a valuable assessment tool not only for the individual child, but supports the curriculum development based on the needs of the children. This assessment tool is also presented to parents so they can be well informed about the growth and development of their child. Parent conferences are held twice a year or more often if needed.

"Schools across the state and nation are focused on supporting all students to reach high standards and to close the achievement gap. In Petaluma City Schools, we know that we cannot do this alone and that by partnering with other agencies and programs we will better educate our students. The North Bay Children's Center is a shining example of a powerful program that greatly contributes to our students' success. North Bay Children's Center gives children a head start by preparing them for school thereby increasing their chances to succeed in reading, math and science for years to come."
